Cricket Surface Maintenance

An Artificial Sports Surface is ideal for cricket surfaces, practice nets and full-length wickets. They can be laid on a shock pad base, either on a dynamic (stone) base or an engineered (macadam) base.

Artificial surfaces with a little more extended pile height are installed in most ECB-approved wicket facilities. Wilton Woven Artificial Grass pile is slightly longer and more porous than needle-pinched surfaces.

They require regular brushing and chemical treatments to keep cricket pitch surfaces playable. Detritus left to contaminate the pitch can adversely affect the pitch’s performance. Bowlers’ run-up areas constructed using sand-filled/dressed carpets will require additional monitoring of sand levels to ensure even distribution, preventing pitch collapse.

HB Sports Surfaces offers professional maintenance services with experience in artificial cricket surfaces. We have the expertise and equipment to ensure the cricket surface remains in top condition.

Here are some key maintenance tasks and considerations for artificial cricket surfaces:

    Regular Cleaning:

Sweeping or using a leaf blower removes debris, leaves, and loose particles from the surface. Regular cleaning helps prevent infill material buildup and keeps the surface clean and safe.

    Power Brushing:

Periodically use power brushing equipment to penetrate the infill material, lift the turf fibres, and prevent compaction. Power brushing can help maintain consistent ball bounce and performance.

    Infill Maintenance:

Monitor the infill material regularly. If you notice signs of displacement or uneven distribution, consider infill top-up services to maintain the recommended infill levels.

    Line Marking:

Regularly repaint and maintain boundary lines and creases to ensure they meet the required standards for play.

    Infill Decompaction:

Schedule decompaction services to break up compacted infill material, promoting optimal ball bounce and surface performance.

    Weather Considerations:

Please be aware of the extreme weather conditions. The surface may become too hot to play on in hot weather, so consider providing shade or cooling methods for players. In cold weather, ensure the surface is not frozen or slippery.

    Grooming and Brushing:

Schedule routine grooming and brushing to maintain the fibres’ upright position and redistribute the material evenly. This helps improve the surface’s appearance and playability.

    Deep Cleaning:

Conduct deep cleaning at least once a year or as needed. This involves using specialised equipment to remove contaminants from the surface, such as moss, algae, and dirt. Deep cleaning can significantly improve the appearance and safety of the surface.

    Regular Inspections:

Perform routine inspections to identify and address issues like seams coming apart, tears, or damaged areas. Prompt repairs can prevent further damage.

    Fungicide Treatment:

If you notice moss or algae growth on the surface, consider applying a suitable fungicide or algaecide to control the issue. Follow manufacturer recommendations and safety precautions.

    Proper Drainage:

Could you make sure that the drainage system is functioning correctly? Adequate drainage prevents waterlogging, which can damage the surface and lead to unsafe playing conditions.

    Player Education:

Please teach players about the proper footwear to use on the artificial surface. Inappropriate footwear can cause damage and increase the need for maintenance.

Following these maintenance guidelines and conducting regular inspections ensures that your artificial cricket surface remains safe, visually appealing, and optimal for playing cricket.
